Mormonism, False Teachings

I John 4:1 records that there are false teachers who appear to be religious. The Bible warns that one must "check them out or be misled.

Matthew 7:15,16 records that false teachers will appear to be in sheep’s clothing, but inside they are ferocious wolves. They must be tested.

Matthew 15:9 records that some false teachers lead others falsely by teaching the traditions (rules and commands) of man.

I Timothy 4:1-3 states that in latter times some will depart from the faith and turn into false teachers.

II Timothy 4:3 gives forewarning concerning those promoting false teachings, by rejecting sound doctrine and seeking that which is not God’s.

Titus 1:11 says that some will teach false doctrine in order to obtain dishonest gain.

II Peter 2:1-3 gives warning of those who will secretly promote false teachings.

Most well meaning Church going people are not very much "into the Bible". Thus, they are not able to "spot" false doctrine (erroneous, inaccurate, improper, not valid, incorrect, mistaken, untrue, faulty, wrong, dishonest, and misleading), Most put a great amount of trust in their Sunday School Teacher and Preacher as being truthful religious leaders. In fact, some are very highly insulted if a friend of another religious persuasion suggests that it is possible that they may be "being misled".

However John 12:48 teaches that it will be by the Word Of God that will judge us on the last day (Romans 14:12). Thus, one should become a serious student of the Word Of God in an attempt to KNOW what God wants us to believe and do to be saved.  If you accept a artificial dollar bill, you are only out a buck.  But if you accept a counterfeit gospel, you are out heaven!

Mormonism is the “$3.00 bill” of Christianity - a sham.  It is a hard saying for some to receive, but it is true.  The Mormon “gospel” for all its Christian sounding jargon, is a erroneous gospel (Galatians 1:6-9).

As a Christian I am obligated to warn people that Mormonism is not a Christian communion any more than the a phony $3.00 bill.  It is not genuine currency.  In fact, even when Joseph Smith, the first Mormon prophet, issued that money (doctrine), it wasn’t sound, and the whole banking scheme collapsed almost immediately.  Although Joseph Smith’s banking career was a total failure, his “religious” pursuits were a bit more successful.  His phony $3.00 bill can’t hurt you but his false gospel can!

You do not have to be an “expert” to identify a counterfeit, you just need to compare it to a authentic article.  The Bible tells us to compare spiritual things with spiritual (I Corinthians 2:13) as the means to proper spiritual discernment.
Therefore, I’d like to present a few of the aspects of Mormonism and its “gospel” for you to compare with Christianity. Rather than make a lot of “statements” or “accusations” I prefer to simply let the Mormon Prophets and Apostles speak for themselves on a few subjects:

“Both Catholics and Protestants are nothing less than the ‘whore of Babylon’ whom the Lord denounces by the mouth of John the Revelator as having corrupted all the earth by their fornications and wickedness.”  Orson Pratt, (Apostle,) The Seer, page 255.

“It is a sounding brass and a tinkling symbol (sic); it is as corrupt as hell; and the Devil could not invent a better engine to spread his work than the Christianity of the nineteenth century.” John Taylor, (4th Prophet,) Journal of Discourses, Volume 6, page 167.

“The birth of the Saviour was as natural as are the births of our children; it was the result of natural action.  He partook of flesh and blood - was begotten of his Father, as we were of our fathers.”  Brigham Young, (2nd Prophet,) Journal of Discourses, Volume 8, page 115.

“Christ was begotten by an Immortal Father in the same way that normal men are begotten by mortal fathers.” Bruce R. McConkie, (Apostle,) Mormon Doctrine, page 547.

“Jesus was the bridegroom at the marriage of Cana of Galilee, and he told them what to do...We say it was Jesus Christ who was married, to be brought into the relation whereby he could see his seed, before he was crucified.” Orson Hyde, (Apostle,) Journal of Discourses, Volume 2, page 82.

“God himself was one as we are now, and is an exalted man...I say, if you were to see him today, you would see him like a man in form - like yourselves, in all the person, image, and very form as a man.  We have imagined and supposed that God was God from all eternity.  I will refute that idea, and will take away the veil, so that you may see.” Joseph Smith, (1st Prophet,) History of the Church, Volume 6, page 305.

“If it had not been for Joseph Smith and the restoration, there would be no salvation.  There is no salvation outside of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.” Bruce R. McConkie, (Apostle,) Mormon Doctrine (1966), page 670.

“I have more to boast of than ever any man had, I am the only man that has ever been able to keep a whole church together since the days of Adam.  A large majority of the whole have stood by me.  Neither Paul, John, Peter, nor Jesus ever did it.  I boast that no man ever did such a work as I.  The followers of Jesus ran away from Him; but the Latter-day Saints never ran away from me yet.” Joseph Smith, (1st Prophet,) History of the Church, Volume 6, page 408-409
“God made Aaron to be the mouth piece for the children of Israel, and  He will make me be god to you in His stead, and the Elders to be mouth for me; and if you don’t like it, you must lump it!” Joseph Smith, (1st Prophet,) Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, page 363.

“Joseph Smith taught that there were certain sins so grievous that man may commit, that they will place the transgressors beyond the power of the atonement of Christ...Therefore their only hope is to have their own blood shed to atone...” Joseph Fielding Smith, (10th  Prophet,) Doctrines of Salvation, Volume 1, page 135.

“I wish to declare I have always and in all congregations when I have preached on the subject of the Deity, it has been the plurality of Gods...the doctrine of a plurality of Gods is as prominent in the Bible as any other doctrine.  It is all over the face of the Bible.  It stands beyond the power of controversy.” Joseph Smith (1st Prophet,) History of the Church, Volume 6, page 474.

“Here then is eternal life - to know the only wise and true God; and you have got to learn how to be Gods yourselves, and to be kings and priests, to God, the same as all Gods have done before you...” Joseph Smith, (1st Prophet,) History of the Church, Volume 6, page 306.

“The fact that there is no reference to a mother in heaven either in the Bible, Book of Mormon or Doctrine and Covenants, is NOT sufficient proof that no such thing as a mother did exist there.  If we had a Father, which we did, for all of these records speak of him, then does not good common sense tell us that we must have had a mother there also?” Joseph Fielding Smith (10th Prophet,) Answers to Gospel Questions, Volume 3, page 142.

“No one can tell whether even one verse of either the Old or New Testament conveys the ideas of the original author.” Orson Pratt, (Apostle,) Journal of Discourses, Volume 7, page 28.

“Q. Does the Book of Mormon contain any additional light not contained in the Bible?”

“A. The whole volume without exception to any of its parts, contains additional light and truth.” Orson Pratt. (Apostle,) The Seer, page 212.

“I told the brethren that the Book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on earth, and the keystone of our religion, and a man would get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts, than by any other book.” Joseph Smith, (1st Prophet,) History of the Church, Volume 4, page 461.

May we all be convinced that God would have us to know the truth.  Truth does not come easy - it takes many long hours, months and years to acquire a good working knowledge of the Scriptures.

Plainly, don’t get short changed.  Let’s be ready to meet our Maker.  The Bible teaches in the Book of Acts that to avoid hell and gain heaven - one must:

 1) Believe In Jesus As Savior (16:31)

2) Repent Of Sins  (17:30)

3) Confess Christ Audibly (8:37)

4) Be Baptized In  Water (2:38)

5) Live A  Christian Life (14:22)

6) Be Active In the Church (2:47)
